Glock is a modern duty pistol, which is pretty impressive for a company that was founded to make bolt-action pistols. Gaston Glock had no experience in the manufacture of weapons, but he had experience in the production of polymers. He brought together Europe's top pistol experts, developed the Glock 17 prototype in 1982, and the rest is proud Austrian history.

The G17 was the first model produced and was designed to meet the needs of the Austrian army. The specific needs of the Austrian military have fueled the development of the weapon and defined Glock pistols to this day. The Austrian Army needed a safe, lightweight, high-capacity, and reliable semi-automatic pistol, and the Glock met that need.
Glock has a simple way of naming their weapons. Each model is assigned a number after the letter G, which predictably corresponds to a Glock. The numbers have nothing to do with the firearm and seem arbitrary for the most part - for example the G45 is not a .45 caliber pistol, it is actually a 9mm.
Designs are numbered at launch, not in the order in which they were released. So while the G20 and 21 started development before the 22 and 23, the 22 and 23 came out first.
The G17 hit the streets at a time when manual safety devices were commonplace on handguns. The Plastic Fantastics Glock didn't have a manual safety, but that didn't mean they were dangerous. Glock refers to its pistols as the Glock Safe Action Pistol, which refers to the three built-in independent safety features.

The safety of the trigger is this famous shower which is in the middle of the trigger. Your finger presses the trigger safety when you pull the trigger, so without activating the trigger safety, the trigger will not be pulled.
The firing safety prevents the firing pin from moving forward when the firing pin is fired. When the trigger is pulled, the trigger bar pushes the bullet safety up and away. If you release the trigger before firing, the fire safety will automatically snap back into place.
A blowout safety is a device that does exactly what you think it does. If you drop the gun, it ensures that it cannot fire. When you pull the trigger, the trigger bar lowers the safety ramp and allows the firing pin to release.
Glock is now in its fifth generation. As Glock makes changes, the exterior and interior receive new generations. There is no timeline for the end or start of the Glock generations, they will be upgraded as needed.

The release of a new generation does not always mean the disappearance of previous generations. Often new and old generations of Glock are produced side by side.
There are also firearms that exist outside of the specified generations of Glock. Some weapons are ubiquitous and may not have generation markers to identify which generation the weapon is used for. Some guns are also divided into generations, most commonly between Gen 2 and Gen 3 guns. Glock enthusiasts often refer to them as Gen 2.5 pistols.
Gen 1 - The first Glocks on the market. Plain and simple: these are guns that work. Gen 1 consists entirely of one pistol, the Glock 17.
Gen 2 - Glock added different sizes and calibers with the Gen 2 models. A metal plate was serial numbered, the guide rail system was converted to a one-piece design, a checkerboard was added to the fore and aft the back of the grip and the main magazine plate has been replaced.

Generation 3 - Third generation saw rails become a standard option on guns larger than subcompacts. Finger grooves have been added to the handle and dowels are cut into the left and right sides of the frame to serve as finger rests.
Internal modifications included a cross pin above the trigger pin to relieve stress on the lock block. The manufacturer is also displayed when the camera is charged and appears as a charged camera indicator.
Gen 4 - With Gen 4, Glock made the pistol grip slightly smaller and added a modular stock system to change grip size. The battle also wove more aggressively and publication of the magazine was returned to leftists.
The Gen 4 also included a dual spring rod which reduces felt recoil. Generation 4 also saw the introduction of MOS guns, which allowed for easy optical mounting.

Gen 5 - The latest generation of Glock is the Gen 5. These pistols have had finger grooves cut out, the magazine well has been flared for faster loading, a relief cut has been made in the trigger guard for better grip and the sliding lock is now functional. bilaterally.

A very common question for new Glock buyers is "What is my Glock?" Prior to the release of the 4th Generation, Glock did not officially recognize model numbers, adhering to the idea that "a Glock is a Glock, a Glock is a Glock – they're all the same". But early collectors noticed the differences and informally settled on three main iterations, or “generations,” by which they are categorized. The nomenclature has become so popular that Glock followed suit with a Gen 4 version in 2008, and their promotional literature now highlights previous Gens in some places.
The images below will help you clearly identify which generation your Glock is a part of, but keep in mind that there is a lot of overlap as the models have been slowly transferred. Also, 3rd Gen guns are still made in California due to gun restrictions, so you might have a 5th Gen gun that's actually bigger than your 3rd Gen! Notes on images identify major features that are consistent across genres, but small changes in characters and internals may occur at different intervals and sometimes back and forth within the same genre. Generation 1 was one of constant change. The initial design, while reliable, was still a work in progress. A consistent feature is the handle design that wraps around the entire handle (without checking the front or back strap). It has a softer feel compared to later generations and is considered "rock cloth" by collectors. Early firearms featured an earlier introduced thinner Parkerized stainless steel barrel (later prefix AD) and increased barrel wall thickness later than prefix AN. There are also several variations on the charger, case and small internal parts. All guns have Austrian approval marks, but no permanent placement or number of marks. Very old (pre-US) rifles and those intended for European markets do not have a serial number on the frame. Most early firearms were also equipped with sights called "Weak Sights" due to their fragility. Standard (fixed) marks are also periodically correct, although the target version takes a bounty. All frames had nice half-moon embossing on the bottom of the front straps except for the few 19s that were made.

The 2nd generation is what many novice collectors or even knowledgeable dealers refer to as "Generation 1". The confusion stems from two factors: 1. Generation 1s are rare and many casual observers may not have seen them before. 2.
